Therapy and counseling are two very similar processes, but you’ll find most therapists will tell you that they are still quite different. While, during therapy, you can receive counseling too regarding certain issues, a therapy session is far more in-depth. Here, the practical skills of the therapist come into effect, as they delve into your subconscious, explore your past, or assess the way your mind protects certain traumas and copes with problems as part of an addictive behavior or anything similar.
A counseling session is more about discovering a problem that is currently active and learning to deal with it through regular, day-to-day processes. For instance, you might have some issues with your spouse and are thinking of getting a divorce. A counseling session is appropriate in this case, as it helps you and your spouse explore other possibilities and perhaps set you on a path where you can actually save your marriage.
While therapy might be necessary in the case of a serious health problem like depression, PTSD or schizophrenia, counseling is more “mild” in nature, addressing day-to-day discrepancies and issues such as learning to behave more assertively at work, rather than being too passive or aggressive. You can also have seasonal affective disorder light therapy sessions which are completely different than counseling sessions. Counseling is also recommended when a pair or a group of people have a problem and the counseling expert is there to help them sort it out.
