Grief Counseling

Grief is a natural emotional response resulting from a significant loss, especially the loss of a loved one. Depending on the person and the situation, grief can be handled with the assistance of close friends and family members who listen to your grief and allow you to process your loss. However, for some people, grief can become too painful. It can grow into something totally different, like depression or anxiety. Some symptoms of grief you may experience are lack of appetite, weight loss, insomnia, and depression. In addition, thoughts dominated by loss coupled with poor concentration, tearful spells, and confusion about the future. Finally, having a strong emotional response of sadness when losses are discussed.

Treatment for Grief/Loss
Talk-therapy is effective with grief and loss due to giving the patient the ability to talk about their grief in a safe and nurturing environment. Moreover, I use the concepts from a time-tested approach created by by Alan Wolfelt, Ph.D. which focuses on reconciling your grief.
Goal for Treatment
"An important concept to keep in mind as you journey through grief is that of reconciliation. You cannot "get over" or "recover from" or "resolve" your grief, but you can reconcile yourself to it. That is, you can learn to incorporate it into your consciousness and proceed with meaning and purpose in your life."
Alan D. Wolfelt, Ph.D.
