I use cognitive behavioral therapy as well as person-centered approaches to treat anxiety, depression, personality disorders, and developmental disorders.

Kraig is a Licensed Clinical Social Worker with specific training in mental health counseling. Kraig earned his Master’s Degree in Social Work from Loyola University in Chicago. He currently practices in Castle Rock, CO and does both individual counseling and couples counseling. His passion is helping people be their best and making sure his client feel heard.

“Our time spent with Kraig as our counselor was time well spent. My wife and I were indeed struggling with our relationship and seeking a professional turned out to be one of the best decisions we could have made. Kraig has been nothing but a true professional in all of our sessions. His soft-spoken demeanor and his approach to our relationship in helping us rebuild that relationship have been nothing short of a wonderful experience. Always listening and allowing us to express ourselves in a positive environment, we were able to start that process of re-establishing our marriage. We were his “rock star clients” as he put it to us. Always encouraging our relationship forward. Today our marriage together is stronger than it has ever been. With hard work, commitment and his direction we have experienced a new beginning. Really a new life together, exciting! We will be forever grateful to Kraig for bringing us back to being the married couple, as well as the family we wanted and needed. Kraig, thank you sir and God bless you.”

-Gary

“When we met Kraig, I was at my wit’s end. No one was giving my son the time of day. Therapists included. Kraig took the time to build a relationship with him and earned his trust. We have a quality of life now that we never could have achieved without his care.”

-Nicole

Testimonials

“Kraig is a unique therapist. When I experienced the deaths of both of my parents within eight months of each other, and then the accidental death of my best friend of forty years, all within a two year period, I knew I needed help. Kraig was not only compassionate, empathetic and logical, he actually used science and psychology to craft a tailor-made plan for me. To try to get through your grief alone, with no real plan, makes no sense. He can and did make a huge difference for me. It is a process that few people understand and friends and family are not able to help you with it. He is amazing”

Client Testimonial

“Our family has found great benefit from counseling with Kraig! He has provided wisdom along with valuable insights to work together to build bridges within our family”

Dr. Patrick and Heidi Knapp

“I began seeing Kraig Smiegowski in early 2018. I was suffering from anxiety and depression, most of which stemmed from the pressures of my job. Even though I was taking medicine for both these conditions it was not enough. I needed additional help and tools to deal with the feelings I was experiencing on a daily basis. Through weekly sessions with Kraig, he helped me identify the source of my issues and provided me with a combination of tools, books, exercises, and techniques to help me significantly improve my ability to deal with my anxiety and depression. Kraig has a very understanding and calming approach to therapy and I highly recommend him for anyone seeking counseling.”

Kraig & Associates Counseling has years of experience helping patients with treatments of anxiety disorders and depression.

Effective Treatments for Depression

Goals for Treatment of Depression

The goal of treatment for depression is to alleviate depressive symptoms and return the client to a previous level of effective functioning. In addition, to help the individual develop healthy thinking patterns and beliefs about themselves and others that will help prevent the relapse of depression.

By obtaining this information couples can begin to re-channel behavior into effective strategies for loving and caring for each other. Acknowledging and letting go of inappropriate beliefs from childhood.

Married couples will learn to acknowledge and let go of inappropriate beliefs from childhood, replace ineffective behaviors and defense strategies to regain the romance and fun in the couple’s relationship.

Couples will learn to foster respect, affection, and closeness. Build and share a deeper connection and resolve conflict gridlock. Learn research-based tools of successful relationships and strengthen and maintain success in your relationship.

Therapy for Trauma

Trauma can be described as a powerful emotional response to a distressing event, such as an unexpected loss of a loved one, or abuse. Trauma can continue to cause both emotional and physical symptoms for many years after the event has concluded. Some symptoms of trauma a person can experience could be avoidance of trauma reminders, including memories, flashbacks to the traumatic event, irritability, anger, and other negative emotions. In addition, distressing dreams and other sleep problems, and self-blame regarding the traumatic event.

Treatments for Trauma

COGNITIVE BEHAVIORAL THERAPY – CBT works by identifying and challenging unhealthy thinking patterns that contribute to the symptoms of trauma.

NARRATIVE EXPOSURE THERAPY – Which exposes the individual to reminders of the trauma via writing exercises in a gradual and safe way. The narrative exposure therapy helps patients to experience their trauma in a safe environment which helps to reduce the emotional power of trauma which reduces symptoms.

Goals for Trauma

Reduce symptoms of previous trauma experience and gain a sense of empowerment and control. In addition, to develop healthy boundaries with others and feeling comfortable to say no.

 Grief Counseling

Grief is a natural emotional response resulting from a significant loss, especially the loss of a loved one. Depending on the person and the situation, grief can be handled with the assistance of close friends and family members who listen to your grief and allow you to process your loss. However, for some people, grief can become too painful. It can grow into something totally different, like depression or anxiety, which is known as complicated grief. Some symptoms of grief you may experience are lack of appetite, weight loss, insomnia, and depression. In addition, thoughts dominated by loss coupled with poor concentration, tearful spells, and confusion about the future. Finally, having a strong emotional response of sadness when losses are discussed.

Treatment for Grief/Loss

Talk-therapy is effective with grief and loss due to giving the patient the ability to talk about their grief in a safe and nurturing environment. Moreover, I use the concepts from a time-tested approach created by Alan Wolfelt, Ph.D. which focuses on reconciling your grief.

Goal for Treatment

“An important concept to keep in mind as you journey through grief is that of reconciliation. You cannot “get over” or “recover from” or “resolve” your grief, but you can reconcile yourself to it. That is, you can learn to incorporate it into your consciousness and proceed with meaning and purpose in your life.” Alan D. Wolfelt, Ph.D.

How does counseling work?

People seek counseling for many different reasons: a crisis, a loss, a major life change, to sort things out to have a happier life, or to improve relationships. Counseling may include individual, group, and/or family sessions.

How long does it take?

Each session lasts typically 50 minutes. Your therapist will establish with you a regular schedule based on your specific needs. A person may come to counseling once or twice or may choose to continue counseling until they have met their goals for life improvement.

The number of sessions depends on several factors, including but not limited to the goals for therapy, the severity of issues encountered, and of course, the client’s willingness to actively participate.

What if I must cancel my counseling session?

There is no charge for any session canceled 24 or more hours prior to the scheduled time. However, sessions canceled with less than 24 hours’ notice will be charged a fee in the amount of the session.

Please contact Kraig & Associates if you feel that you or a loved one may need grief counseling therapy or grief counseling resources.
